Quest for Glory behind the scenes article is now online

GamesTM has just posted my Quest for Glory behind the scenes article on their website. This article ran in the magazine about a year ago. It was super fun to write (mainly because Lori Cole gave a kick-ass interview) and I’m excited that even more people will get a chance to read it now!

The article chronicles the rise and fall of Sierra’s Quest for Glory series between its debut in the late 80s and its conclusion a decade later. I said a bit more about it here. (But it’s silly to read that old blog post when you could read the article instead…)

Speaking of GamesTM and Sierra retrospectives, I have a similar article in the current issue, this time about Gabriel Knight. I haven’t seen it yet but my copy is in the mail, so as soon as it gets here I’ll post some more info. The issue number is 106 and it’s on sale in the UK now.

Hands-on preview of Telltale’s Jurassic Park

Man vs. beast. Who do you think will win?

Last week I had the chance to play part of Telltale’s upcoming Jurassic Park game. Check out my hands-on impressions at Adventure Gamers.

I’m really not a Jurassic Park fan—I only saw the first movie, once, back when it was in theaters—but I’m loving the departure from Telltale’s previous games, from a cinematic standpoint. They’ve been comparing it to Heavy Rain (which I tragically haven’t played, due to a lack of a PlayStation 3) and from what I’ve seen so far, I think it’s a great way to tell this type of story. It’s enough like an adventure game while still as action-packed as you’d expect a Jurassic Park movie to be. As for the Quick Time Events, I don’t mind them, but that’s not really what makes it fun for me (and I expect they aren’t the aspect of Heavy Rain that I’d most enjoy, either).

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go refill my coffee cup by frequently tapping the X button until the liquid reaches the brim…

Rosedale dry fit (part 2)

And now… part 2 of the great Rosedale dry fit adventure! Last time I got the first and second floors mostly figured out. Before moving onto the third floor, I decided to add a porch door to one of the small rooms on the second floor, to access the balcony. I thought about bashing the front door from Kit B to make it a porch door, but for simplicity’s sake picked out a Houseworks Victorian oval door instead.

The oval opening matches nicely with the Rosedale’s oval windows, but the door is slightly too tall, and the peaked pediment doesn’t really go with the window and door trim on the rest of the house. As luck would have it, both of the oval doors the miniature shop had in stock were damaged, with the pediment split away from the door frame. Seeing this gave me the idea to remove the pediment completely.

Removing the pediment made it just the right height. I cut a hole for the door using the doorway on the opposite wall as a guide. The Houseworks door is slightly wider than the Rosedale’s doorways, but at least both doors are the same distance from the back edge of the house.
